“Let the breeze be gentle…Soave sia il vento” , we would like to say with Mozart, in a country so fond of music, to the unprecedented Traffic lights coalition that now governs Germany.
It will indeed take all the subtlety of Mozart, and even his gentleness, to conciliate, as with the magical trio of Cosi fan tutte, so many diverse aspirations under the constraints of inescapable necessities. And the art of navigators will also be subject to winds, unpredictable by definition.
However, major reforms and improvements to public infrastructure are needed. This will have to be done in accordance with the great equilibrium of public finances and the control of taxation dear to Liberals. Environmental inaction will no longer be possible and the choice made of polluting energy years ago will have to be reconsidered. The realistic and not purely ideological ecology of a woman, who may well prove to be the strong man of the government, will be welcome for neighbouring countries as well as for the whole Europe. Her commitment to values, starting with her first and noble statements on the humanitarian tragedy in Afghanistan, is already a source of great respect.
Good luck to Germany and Europe. Reunion (« L’Ami retrouvé »), as in this wonderful book by Fred Uhlman, for having been discreet and sometimes kept away by the vagaries and vicissitudes of time, will be no less present. “Let the breeze be gentle, let the wave be peaceful, and let every element respond to our desires…Soave sia il vento, Tranquilla sia l’onda ed ogni elemento benigno risponda ai nostri desir“.
