On this first day of the Year of the Tiger, it was natural to visit Radjah and honour him. Like all white tigers, its lineage comes from the same breeding of a maharajah in India. But crosses then occurred with tigers from Amur and Ussuri.

This region was the setting of the magnificent Soviet-Japanese production Dersu Uzala by filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, based on Vladimir Arsenyev’s autobiographical work. The film not only recounted the friendship between a Siberian and a topographer of the Russian Imperial Army, tasked with surveying uncharted border areas, but it also heralded new attention to preserving nature’s balance.

Amur and Ussuri were also the scene of violent Sino-Soviet clashes in the late 1960s. The worst and the best occurred there. But like the hunter Dersu, we must fear the tiger, insofar as it is the symbol and the guarantor of  balances, and simply to hurt him can be fateful.
